"Be Still"

The story

I was asked to create a piece for a dear friend's home. She commissioned me to paint Jesus walking on the waves toward the light breaking across the horizon. She shared a few inspiration photos as a starting point, but more importantly, I wanted to invite the Lord into the process and allow Him to lead the way. I have learned that He is the greatest Creator. He is endlessly intelligent, beautiful, and inspiring. Every painting begins with a willingness to listen and follow where He leads. This piece was created during my exploration of what her final commissioned painting might become. It was a smaller study before I moved into the larger canvas created specifically for her home. Though it was part of the learning process, this painting captured something that deeply moved me. It stirred wonder, peace, and affection for Jesus. As I worked, I sensed the title, Be Still. At first, I wasn't sure it fit. The scene felt active—waves moving, light breaking, Jesus walking. Yet the Lord gently revealed what He was saying. When Peter stepped out of the boat, the miracle was never found in the absence of waves. It was found in the presence of Jesus. Peace was not the result of calm surroundings, but of fixing his eyes on the One who stood above the storm. "Be still, and know that I am God." — Psalm 46:10 This painting became an invitation to quiet the noise, lift our eyes, and remember who is standing in the midst of the waves with us. I am grateful for what the Lord revealed through this piece and for the privilege of sharing it with others. Praise God.
